SICILY. Katane. Circa 412-410 BC. Drachm (Silver, 19 mm, 4.01 g, 2 h), reverse die signed by Euainetos. KATANAIΩ/N Charioteer driving quadriga galloping to right, holding kentron in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying left, crowning the charioteer with a wreath. Rev. AMENANOΣ Horned head of the young river-god Amenanos to left, wearing tainia; three fish around; in field to left, EYAI in tiny letters; all within shallow circular incuse. HGC 2, - cf. 581 (differing reverse type). Rizzo pl. XIV, 8 (same dies). SNG ANS -. SNG Ashmolean -. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG Fitzwilliam -. SNG Lockett -. SNG München -. An extremely rare variety. Nicely toned, struck on an exceptionally broad flan, and with a wonderful head of the river-god Amenanos by the hand of the celebrated master engraver Euainetos. The obverse a bit weak and with cleaning scratches, otherwise, very fine.
